Superstore Season 5 Episode 6 Review: Trick Or Treat

Amy and Jonah finally remembered they were in a relationship on Superstore Season 5 Episode 6.
They may have spent the entire episode in a passive agressive arguement, but at least they had some interaction for a change.

At this point, we'd rather Amy and Jonah be fighting than ignoring each other like usual.
Therein lies the problem.
When viewers have witnessed so little interaction between the show's main pairing that they want them to fight simply so they can share scenes, the show is doing something wrong.
It's been hard for me to criticize the show the way I've wanted to during Superstore Season 5 because it's so well-loved, and it deserves to succeed.
But this isn't the show I fell in love with, and I want it back.
The excuse that Amy and Jonah can't show PDA because they're at work feels more like an opportunity to be lazy than anything else.
Amy and Jonah don't have to be making out all the time for them to act like a couple. But then again, being at work has never stopped them or any of the other couples in the past, so that excuse feels like it came out of left-field.

The photo room is even referred to by the employees as the "bang room" because that's where the workers go to have sex.
Things might be different since Amy and Jonah got suspended and Amy became manager, but those things are worth working around to showcase a relationship that is important to the show and its fans.
Amy's anger over Jonah working with Kelly was a surprising highlight of the episode.
It's kind of a bummer to find out this way that the two of you are raising my baby!
Amy
I didn't like what went down by any means, but it's hard not to be thankful that something did.
Amy and Jonah might not have been a happy couple during the 22 minute period, but at least we knew they were a couple.
Thank goodness Sandra is there to cheer Simmosa on the way we wish we could.
The parallel to Superstore Season 3 Episode 15 was especially funny and a great callback.
Sandra: Jonah's in love with Amy!
Maya: Wait...what?
Amy: What? I don't know that...Jonah is that true?
Jonah: It's true. I love her. Sorry, Kelly. I probably should've told you before telling the entire store, but I am breaking up with you.
Maya: It seems like I should give you guys a little privacy.
Jonah: Uh, no, no, no! Because I need to explain more to you, Kelly. You're a great gal, but Amy and I just have a connection.
Kelly: I hate coming to this stupid store.
Jonah's obvious feelings for Amy being exemplified in front of all the employees and his current girlfriend was the best "revelation of feelings" scene in television history.

Although it didn't hold quite the same effect as Kelly and Jonah only fake-dating and everyone knowing Amy and Jonah were in love, I'll take an Amnesty parallel any day.
The episode wasn't all bad on the Simmosa front. There was an interesting conversation where Amy started talking about the union and ended up talking about Jonah's relationship with her baby.
Amy: It's like this union is my baby and I don't even get to drop it off at college.
Jonah: Our baby.
Amy: Okay, yeah, sure. You help, obviously. And I love that you have a connection with the baby-
Jonah: Are we still talking about the...?
Amy: The union. Yeah, of course.
According to Amy, that was still the union. Sure.
At least the two of them are moving somewhere now. If they were going to stay stagnant, they might as well break up.
It's like when you're going on vacation, and your car breaks down. No matter how much you wanted to go on that trip, you'd rather call a cab and go home then be stuck on the side of the road forever.
Besides, maybe if they broke up, we would finally get quality scenes between them again.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Amy and Jonah are not the only characters on Superstore, and the sitcom is about more than only them.

But they are the two main characters, and one of the biggest and best storylines has always been about their relationship.
You need more than one piece to make a puzzle. But take the most vital piece away and you have no idea what you're looking at. That's how Superstore feels now.
On another note, Maya is a great addition to the store, and she'll, hopefully, turn out to be on the employees' side.
She seems like the kind of person who keeps things real, and there's no way she doesn't know that the company treats its employees like crap.
We both know that I just threw on the first thing I found in the store, okay?
Maya
Maya saw the union cards. Amy and Jonah might not know it for certain, but it's highly unlikely she breezed by them.
The new district manager's feelings about the union could either make or break everything the employees have been trying to accomplish.
Will she fight against them? Or will she fight for them? We're hoping for the latter.
Stray Thoughts:
- Sadly, viewers still don't know the name of the serial killer leaving a trail of human feet at the store. Not that we ever thought it was Dina. At least, not really.
- Garrett taking the opportunity to play on Glenn's fear of haunted houses was the most in-character thing the show's ever done. Where would we be without him?
- Jonah should have told Amy he was working with Kelly, but we know there wasn't malicious intent.
- If there was ever going to be a fake-dating scenario, could it have been between Jonah and Amy in the earlier seasons? That would have been a fun episode, for sure.
- Mateo and Cheyenne are back in action, and we couldn't be happier about it. I didn't even realize how much I missed them until now.
- Given the effort he puts in, there are not a lot of things Marcus deserves at Cloud 9. But he did deserve to win that costume contest, and he should have.
