Vikings Season 4 Episode 20 Review: The Reckoning

at .  Updated at .

Ivar needs to work on his impulse control.

We all knew it was coming. Ivar was definitely going to kill Sigurd eventually.

However, I can't say I expected it to be quite so public.

Battle Plan - Vikings

Vikings Season 4 Episode 20 could very well be a game changer for the (remaining) sons of Ragnar.

Where do they go from here?

As Bjorn said, they all came together to avenge their father's death, but now it appears they'll all go their separate ways.

Bjorn wants to return to the Mediterranean, and it shouldn't too hard to get enough people to follow him.

Ivar, on the other hand, wants to lead the army and continue raiding. He was well on his way to enticing nearly the entire crowd to follow him, but that was before he threw an ax at his own brother.

Will anybody want to follow him now? The guy is completely psycho.

History tells us that they will, though, because raiding is what the Vikings do. Still, I think I'd go with Bjorn, return home, or stay and farm the land in England thank you very much.

Honestly it's surprising the other brothers even let Ivar live after what he just did.

Ivar and his brothers didn't exactly get along super well anyway, but now there's going to be an even bigger rift between them.

Bjorn: I'm sorry to hear of Helga's death. We knew each other a long time. Since I was a boy.
Floki: I too am dead, Bjorn. A part of me died with my daughter, Angrboda, a second part with Ragnar, and the last part of what was Floki died with my sweet, sad Helga. What I am now is nothing. And all this nothing I give to the gods to do with as they please. And I shall be an empty ship with no rudder set upon their endless sea. And where they take me, I shall go.

Of course, Sigurd wasn't the only death. We lost Helga, too.

I said I didn't know where they were going with this whole adopted kid storyline, and I really can't say I was expecting a murder/suicide.

The girl was clearly unhappy, but it was looking like maybe she was starting to bond with Floki. Maybe that was just meant to throw us off.

Floki laying Helga to rest was heartbreaking. He was against bringing that girl home from the beginning, and it ended in the worst way possible.

I've said before that I used to hate Floki, but now it's impossible not to sympathize with him. I hope we see him again. I can't imagine that we won't.

Aethelwulf - Vikings Season 4 Episode 20

If there's one thing Vikings does well, it's fight scenes.

We picked up right where Vikings Season 4 Episode 19 left off, right in the middle of an intense and bloody battle.

It didn't take long before Aethelwulf was forced to accept defeat and retreat.

Before he did though, Ecbert renounced his crown to him, making him king.

The Vikings were of course unaware of this, and I have to assume that makes the deal they made with Ecbert null and void.

What's going to happen when they find out their legally acquired land isn't actually so legally acquired? Will they be driven from the land, or will they fight back and win? I guess we will have to wait and see.

One thing we know, if Aethelwulf returns, he's going to bring reinforcements. He's not coming back unprepared.

By then, most of the Vikings will have most likely returned home, or gone off with Bjorn or Ivar. Those left behind will be ill-equipped to defend the land. This could get ugly.

Ivar: My opinion is that we should take the land. But I have one condition, that Ecbert dies, and that I Blood Eagle him. Otherwise, there is no deal.
Bjorn: You wouldn't be able to stand up long enough to Blood Eagle him.
Ivar: I imagine me sitting.

Ivar didn't get his way with Ecbert.

I can't say I'm disappointed. Watching one Blood Eagle was enough for me.

After Ecbert signed the paperwork, Bjorn could have gone back on his end, but he let Ecbert go out on his own terms.

Ecbert's life didn't exactly flash before his eyes, but he did relive some important moments through his memories. He seemed to be at peace with his death.

We didn't check in with Kattegat at all, so we still don't know if Torvi is alive or dead. I hope she's alive, but I'm curious to see Bjorn's reaction if she's dead.

If he's planning to head straight back to the Mediterranean, he won't even know for awhile.

Bishop Heahmund - Vikings Season 4 Episode 20

Jonathan Rhys Meyers made his debut as Bishop Heahmund. That was quite the introduction to his character.

I really don't know much about him, but I suspect he will be a big part of Vikings Season 5.

Were you guys satisfied with the finale, and the second half of Vikings Season 4 as a whole? There was no shortage on big deaths, that's for sure.

It may be awhile before it returns, but you can always watch Vikings online to hold you over in the meantime.
