Recap

On the boat, Will thanks Balthamos for accompanying him and leaving Baruch. Balthamos says he had been with Baruch for 400 years and can always sense his presence, wherever he is, because of their strong bond. Balthamos says Baruch is near Asriel.

Baruch flies and lands near Asriel's base camp.

Gomez's mechanical insect arrives in the stone chapel. Mrs. Coulter senses something, but it quickly flies away.

Lyra dreams of the land of the dead. She hears Roger calling her, asking for help, and sees him through the mist. He walks away, and she screams after him.

Lyra wakes up. Lyra tells Pan she was in the land of the dead.

Asriel brings Ogunwe to the base, introducing him to Ruta Skadi (and her daemon Sergei). Ogunwe asks how much more of an army they will need. Asriel tells him they only need enough to provoke the Authority.

Asriel brings Ogunwe into his headquarters, telling him that dust is the key to this provocation. Asriel says they must force the Authority to show his face, which is when they will need fighters.

Dr. Mary casts her I Ching sticks and continues traveling through this world that is new to her. She comes upon an abandoned-looking base, where she meets two resistance soldiers. The soldiers draw a gun on her, but Dr. Mary insists she means no harm; she is looking for a girl named Lyra.

The soldiers ask if she was followed, explaining that something happened a few days ago, and now Temple soldiers are everywhere. They hear the sound of an aircraft overhead, but it passes over them.

Mrs. Coulter meets Ama in the woods in her garden, where the girl has had a poor harvest -- Mrs. Coulter will go hungry.

Lord Roke, a Gallivespian, informs Asriel that their spy, Salmakia, has discovered that the Magisterium is sending a search party for Lyra.

Stelmaria tells Asriel he dismissed Lyra too quickly, given that he knows what the Magisterium believes about her.

Asriel insists that Lyra is not Eve, only a child, and has little value other than her ability to read the alethiometer. Stelmaria growls at him.

Ruta Skadi comes in, informing Asriel that angels are above the camp.

Two angels are locked in combat in the skies. They fall to the ground like a meteor. Asriel, Ogunwe, and others draw their weapons on the fallen angels. Asriel discerns that one is on their side, one on the Authority's. Ruta guesses that one is an archangel but doesn't know about the other.

Asriel approaches the other, who has a steaming black patch on his back. He touches the angel, and the angel cries out. It is Baruch, and he says he has a message for Asriel.

Asriel tells the others that the archangel must be on the Authority's side, and Asriel orders the soldiers to take him to the "intercision field chamber."

Baruch tells Asriel they have found the bearer of the Æsahættr, the only weapon that can destroy the Authority and his regent -- Baruch's brother Enoch.

Xaphania arrives on the scene, asking Baruch who did this to him. Baruch tells her it was another angel. As he slowly fades, Baruch tells them to find the boy, who is on his way to Lyra and accompanied by the angel Balthamos. Baruch dissolves into dust.

On the boat with Will, Balthamos feels Baruch's death. He explains this to Will, upset that they separated in the first place.

Father Gomez studies his holy book. His mechanical insect spy returns.

Ruta finds Ogunwe in the headquarters, where he tells her the angel did not resist imprisonment. Ogunwe expresses bafflement at his sudden introduction of angels and witches. She assures him that even though they live longer than humans, they are still willing to fight alongside them.

Alarbus, the archangel, is locked in the chamber, which seals dust in completely.

Asriel asks Alarbus what the Authority is afraid of. Asriel mentions that he already knows about the regent. From Alarbus's facial expression, he discerns that the Authority is incapable of ruling.

Asriel turns on the chamber, which causes Alarbus great pain -- parts of him seem to split prismatically, and he screams. Asriel asks how Enoch became regent. Alarbus says his name is no longer Enoch but Metatron.

Asriel turns up the pressure in the chamber. Alarbus loses his human form again, splitting further into dust and light, screaming. Stelmaria tells Asriel to stop, so he does. Alarbus regains his human form.

Asriel asks what Metatron wants. Alarbus explains that there will be a great inquisition of all living beings that will to their complete submission to Heaven. He tells Asriel he will not be able to enter the kingdom of Heaven -- Metatron doesn't even know who Asriel is.

Satisfied with his questioning, Asriel leaves Alarbus alone in the chamber.

The soldiers explain to Dr. Mary that they have been there for years and joined the resistance because it gave them more opportunities, unlike the Temple.

Dr. Mary asks about their parents. They say their father helped them escape the Temple but wouldn't join them. Dr. Mary asks where everyone else is. They explain that a stranger came and blew a hole in the sky, everyone went through with Ogunwe, but they stayed behind.

Dr. Mary guesses it was like a window to another world, and she confirms that this is how she got here. Dr. Mary explains that she had better go, but the soldiers urge her to stay a little longer, to eat and drink with them, and ask her about the girl she is looking for.

Father President MacPhail addresses his soldiers, giving them a speech before their Eve retrieval mission. He orders them to bring the girl and her mother back, dead or alive. Salmakia watches from a hiding spot.

Will tries to comfort Balthamos, who is at a loss for what to do.

From a hiding spot, Ama watches Mrs. Coulter and her monkey leave the chapel.

MacPhail's soldiers, including Gomez (with stowaway Salmakia), head out on their mission.

Will, Iorek, and Balthamos arrive on the island where Lyra is. Iorek stays behind to keep watch while Will and Balthamos search for her. They come upon Alma in her little garden. Will asks about a girl, and Ama believes he's asking after "the" girl.

Balthamos appears and tells her in sign language that he is an angel and introduces Will and Ama to each other. Will asks Balthamos to ask about Lyra, and he does.

Ama tells them that a girl is being kept asleep by a woman who claims to be her mother, but Ama can't believe a mother would do that.

Balthamos asks if Ama is growing sunroot, a waking medicine. He asks if she intends to use it on Lyra, and she confirms it. She explains that Mrs. Coulter has gone but will be back soon.

Ama takes Will to the chapel, where he finds Lyra asleep. Mrs. Coulter emerges from the shadows. Will asks why she won't let Lyra leave. She asks him to sit with her and offers him tea.

Will asks her who else is coming. She asks him if he brought the knife. He asks why she is keeping Lyra here. Mrs. Coulter says she is keeping Lyra safe from danger because she loves her. He asks her what could be more dangerous to Lyra than her.

Mrs. Coulter reminds him that she has saved Lyra from danger three times, which has cost her everything. She explains that the Magisterium is after Lyra and wants to kill her, believing her to be Eve.

Will asks why Mrs. Coulter is keeping her asleep. Mrs. Coulter explains that Lyra hates her and would try to escape if she was awake. She asks for his help, remarking that the three of them together would make a good team.

Will asks her to promise to keep Lyra safe and says he can now go to Asriel. Mrs. Coulter insists he stay with them so that they can protect each other. Will says he promised his father that he would stand with Asriel just as soon as he knew Lyra was safe.

Mrs. Coulter shames him, saying if he leaves now, Lyra is as good as dead. Will thanks her and leaves.

Asriel consults with Xaphania, Ogunwe, and Ruta, telling them they should find the knife and destroy Metatron. Xaphania doesn't believe Metatron can be killed. Ruta didn't know Æsahættr required a bearer. Ruta says the boy and Lyra tend to be together.

Ogunwe asks about Lyra. Ruta explains that she is Asriel's daughter and is believed to be Eve. Eve is not known in Ogunwe's world, but in many, she is considered the mother of all sin.

Ogunwe is surprised that Asriel has not yet mentioned this to him. Asriel says they don't know where Lyra is, but Lyra doesn't need their protection, and they need the knife.

Asriel asks Roke to contact Salmakia and to tell them as soon as she knows where Lyra is. Ogunwe is surprised Asriel would risk his own daughter. Asriel says he will do whatever it takes because the alternative is much worse.

Xaphania is upset because an angel has been killed and thinks Asriel is selfish.

Xaphania visits Alarbus in the chamber. He calls her a betrayer. Xaphania throws it back at him since he killed Baruch. He tells her Asriel has been torturing him. She tells him the Kingdom of Heaven is already gone, and this is the final rebellion.

Will and Ama return to Balthamos, and they see airships coming in.

Asriel receives a message from Salmakia on the Gallivespian communication device. Salmakia informs him that Lyra is with Marisa Coulter, and there are on a remote island in the German ocean. He asks Salmakia to get the children and keep them safe until he arrives, and he sets out.

Will counts his paces. Ama asks what he is doing. Will explains he'll return by them in another world.

Stelmaria and Lord Asriel board the intention craft.

Mrs. Coulter packs. Her golden monkey screeches. She looks outside and sees the airships.

Lord Asriel attempts to take flight, but it only works with a clear mind, as Stelmaria reminds him. Finally, he can take off.

The monkey and Mrs. Coulter get an idea. They find a great stone, and she tells him to "do his worst." He bashes her on the head with it.

Will asks Balthamos to stand watch, but Balthamos says he is leaving -- it is a human matter now, and he wants no part of it. Balthamos flies away, leaving Ama and Will alone.

Ama gives Will the sunroot, and she signs that she will come with him. He tells her to go home and stay out of danger. He slices into the air and traverses through the grey world.

Mrs. Coulter sist outside the chapel, her forehead bruised and bloody, watching the airships.

Lord Asriel flies.

Father Gomez approaches Mrs. Coulter on the rocks. She tells him he's too late -- Lyra is gone, taken by a boy. She shows him her head wound, saying the boy did it.

Father Gomez tells her he will be taking Lyra now. She tells him again that Lyra is not there. Gomez apologizes, and she sadly leads him in, showing him Lyra asleep.

Gomez asks what her plan was, knowing they would find her eventually and destroy her. He cleans her wound and asks why she's been prolonging Lyra's pain.

Mrs. Coulter notices the slice of light in the air and, seeing Will peer in, subtly shakes her head. She stalls Father Gomez.

Will sneaks into Lyra's room and seals the rip. Father Gomez suggests that Mrs. Coulter poison Lyra while she is asleep and let her die in her arms. Mrs. Coulter asks him to do it for her.

Will wakes Lyra with the sunroot. He tucks Pan into his coat and helps Lyra up.

The golden monkey lunges at Father Gomez. Mrs. Coulter smashes Gomez across the face with the rock.

Mrs. Coulter goes into the bedroom. Will says he is leaving with Lyra, and she can't come. Mrs. Coulter says Lyra needs her. He pulls the knife on her. She asks why he left his mother. He slices open the air while Mrs. Coulter continues to ask about his mother. He cannot cut through, and the knife shatters.

Mrs. Coulter grabs Gomez's gun and tells Will to leave. Lyra stands in between them, in front of her mother's gun. She asks her mother to let her go.

Salmakia stings Mrs. Coulter unconscious. Salmakia says she is to take them to Asriel, but Lyra refuses. Will grabs the gun.

Will and Lyra head out into the open, where the soldiers are firing. Iorek leaps out and attacks, fighting the soldiers while Will and Lyra take cover. A soldier shoots at Will and Lyra. Iorek roars for them to get Lya out.

Another soldier confronts Will and Lyra, but Ama leaps on top of him. Will shoots the soldier dead, and they help Ama up. Will puts the gun down. Will asks Ama to go with them. But she signs she will stay.

Will and Lyra head through the open seam, and Salmakia goes through with them. Asriel and Stelmaria arrive seconds later, finding Gomez and Mrs. Coulter unconscious. Stelmaria tells him they are too late.

Lyra and Will lie together in the grey, barren world. She takes his hand.

His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 2 Quotes

You know what else is interesting? Dust. Fascinating stuff. I’ve spent most of my adult life trying to understand it. I once killed an innocent young boy in order to harness it. But no one, before this moment, has ever tried to weaponize it.

Yesterday I believed that angels were merely symbols, and witches were villains in children’s stories.
