The writing has been on the wall for the Viola Davis-fronted series for a while now.
How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 continued to dip in the ratings, with live + same day ratings of 2.8 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo.

Out of ABC's 21 scripted series, How to Get Away with Murder ranks as the network's 15th highest-rated series.
The show does add on a decent chunk of viewers in delayed viewing, but with the continued erosion, it makes sense that ABC would end it.
The good news is that fans will be getting resolution to that big cliffhanger. Investing many years in a TV show for it to be canceled is not the best.
There are rumors that the renewal is for a final season. Make of that what you will!
How to Get Away with Murder has been highly serialized since it debuted back in 2014.
The show's renewal for one final season also likely spells the end of the TGIT brand that used to originally consisted of HTGAWM, Grey's Anatomy, and Scandal.

All of those shows in that hailed from Shondaland, but with Shonda Rhimes moving to Netflix with an overall deal, the powerhouse will no longer be making shows for anyone outside of the streamer.
